International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans and intersex people are subjected to harassment and discrimination too often. Most of the time, the discrimination that 2SLGBTQ+ people in Canada face happens at work. Workplace harassment, violence and discrimination are especially severe for 2SLGBTQ+ workers who are also Indigenous, Black or racialized.

CUPE’s own research shows that even in the absence of overt violence or harassment, heteronormativity (the assumption that everyone is heterosexual) often shows up at work. This bias can be seen in many ways including in casual conversations, employee records, health benefits forms, employer memos, invitations to social functions and so on.

Cisnormativity, the assumption that everyone identifies with the gender designated at birth, also shapes our workplaces. The gender binary of “woman/female” and “man/male” is built into communications, infrastructure like washrooms and changerooms, and other systems. Many trans and non-binary workers also face frequent misgendering and other forms of harassment from co-workers and managers.

But 2SLGBTQ+ workers and our allies fight to make our work and public services safer for all. CUPE members know that homophobia, transphobia and biphobia have no place in our workplaces or communities. Today and every day, CUPE stands with 2SLGBTQ+ workers to end violence, harassment, and discrimination in all their forms.

Fix Omers Webinar

(Le français suit l’anglais)

Dear OMERS Plan Member,

On Monday, May 9th from 6 to 8pm, CUPE Ontario will host its annual OMERS Forum.

Normally, CUPE Ontario organizes this forum during our convention, but due to an especially tight schedule this year we have decided to put on our OMERS meeting separately.

There are several urgent items we would like to discuss with you. CUPE Ontario recently released a report examining executive compensation at OMERS which should raise concerns for all plan members. The report, which looked at compensation over a ten-year period, discovered OMERS pays some of the highest absolute rates for its top executives despite being one of the smaller plans in the group in terms of assets.

CUPE Ontario also voiced concerns with the administration of OMERS in the past. Last year, we published, Not Just One Tough Year”, which clearly showed that over the past decade, OMERS investment returns have underperformed those of comparable defined benefit pension plans and funds.

OMERS members deserve to know why their plan is paying higher rates of compensation to top executives, while its investments are underperforming compared to the other defined benefit pension plans and funds.

We encourage you to attend this important forum and join us in holding OMERS accountable.

Safe Union Spaces Working Group Interim Report

safe_union_spaces_report_en_fnl

Dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends,

Over the past months, CUPE’s Safe Union Spaces Working Group has worked with external consultants to examine gender-based violence and other forms of discrimination and harassment in our union. We have completed a policy review, a survey, and a series of focus and listening groups as part of this work.

The Working Group met to review the internal and external recommendations that emerged from our research. Our report on the findings was presented at the National Executive Board and is available here.

The report contains a series of recommendations. These involve how to respond better when gender-based violence, discrimination and harassment complaints are raised and how to change our organizational culture to prevent incidents from happening.

The Safe Union Spaces Working Group is now strategizing how to implement these important recommendations, with appropriate support from staff. We will continue to report back to members as our work progresses.

In solidarity,

Candace Rennick, National Secretary-Treasurer (Co-Chair)
Debra Merrier, Diversity Vice-President, Indigenous Workers (Co-Chair)
